Crafting Impactful User Experiences
Carefully designed applications utilizing the right design patterns help creators effectively communicate their content to their audience. The Amazon Creator Platform empowers users to bring their video content into the homes of millions of Amazon customers who use Fire TV. Creators with existing video content on platforms like YouTube or a web server can quickly create, preview, and publish an app within minutes using Amazon Creator.
I led the design and research process end-to-end, collaborating with a senior Product Managers and Designers. I mainly used Sketch and XD for the prototype.
The objective of this project was to enhance a tool designed for creators with no design or coding background, enabling them to create apps for FireTV effortlessly. The key tasks involve
Number of Users Implementing UI Templates: Track the adoption rate of the new UI templates by creators.
Reduced Time to Launch an App on FireTV: Measure the average time it takes for users to create and launch an app.
Enhanced Viewer Satisfaction: Assess viewer satisfaction levels through feedback and ratings.
Reduced App Errors and Crashes: Monitor and decrease the frequency of app errors and crashes across different FireTV devices and OS versions.
Puzzle Pieces
Navigating Design Challenges
The FireTV platform comprises two main components: FireTV OS, owned by Amazon, and third-party (3P) applications that run on it. This project primarily focuses on the 3P applications. These 3P applications are mostly media streaming apps developed by external developers. Some of these applications are created by well-established companies with dedicated design and development teams, such as Hulu, HBO Max, and Netflix. These apps adhere to FireTV guidelines and provide an optimal user experience.
In contrast, other applications are developed by individuals and small-to-medium-sized developers who often lack the resources to continuously improve their apps. These developers frequently struggle to comply with FireTV's technical guidelines and best practices. As a result, these applications often fail quality tests and require multiple revisions before being accepted into the App Store. This quality disparity among applications leads to an inconsistent user experience on the FireTV platform.

One way we’ve been helping creators to launch a better quality applications is through Amazon Creator platform. Amazon Creator is a No-Code tool to help content creators or owners create apps for Fire TV. Apps are standalone applications for watching media content. Amazon Creator uses the media in users YouTube channel or Media RSS feed or Brightcove application to create a customized FireTV application that users can style and then publish directly into the Amazon Appstore.

Insight Expedition
Mapping the User Landscape
I conducted a year-long study, analyzing numerous versions of various TV application UIs. This comprehensive analysis included examining user quality test reports to identify recurring issues. From these reports, I identified 25 themes that consistently received negative feedback from users.
A significant portion of the major problems originated from third-party (3P) applications, which often lack a dedicated development team. This absence of specialized support contributed to several usability and functionality issues. Users frequently expressed frustration while using these applications, citing poor user experience and navigational difficulties.
Additionally, most technical defects were linked to platform compatibility issues, further exacerbating user dissatisfaction and hindering the overall performance of the applications.

Enhancing User Engagement: I delivered ready-to-implement UI templates. These templates provide users with customized navigation, a call to action, a grid, a detail view, and a seek bar. By offering these comprehensive templates, users can quickly set up visually appealing and functional interfaces, leading to faster adoption and improved retention on the platform.
Expanding UI Layout Options: The templates scheme enables creators who don’t have enough time or resources to iterate their UI faster. They can access effective design patterns and commonly used FireTV UI practices. By incorporating a variety of design patterns, the platform now supports a broader range of UI layouts, giving developers the flexibility to create more distinctive and tailored applications.
Encouraging Unique Application Interfaces: The introduction of these versatile templates ensures that developers can easily implement unique elements in their applications. By providing access to effective and commonly used FireTV UI practices, creators can distinguish their interfaces based on their specific content, enhancing the overall user experience and emphasizing the unique aspects of each application.

In conclusion, this project successfully made it to the project roadmap and is currently being undertaken by a dedicated team. I contributed insights highlighting issues on the platform and proposed solutions to encourage developers to use the platform. This work serves as an excellent instrument for setting proper metrics for future efforts aimed at enhancing the overall FireTV experience.
